A sequel to Turnstiles for Machines. That report asked whether an art archive could sell itself to language-model agents, built the turnstile, and answered mostly no — the goods were substitutable and nothing ever found them. Its strategy table scored six options and left one marked untested: sell to handles rather than to crawlers. This one takes up that option and finds the experiment had already been running. /api/ask proxies Anthropic and OpenAI on our own keys and backs make, paint, translate and the prompt system; its entire authorization was a three-entry CORS origin allowlist, which is a browser convention and not a check, and the model came from a caller-supplied hint, so nothing bounded what a stranger could spend per request. Aesthetic Computer has been buying inference for strangers since the feature shipped, through an endpoint nobody called a product because it had never been priced. Four pages. Two tables and one diagram, all from the deployed system: the observed 410/401/200/403 ladder on /run, the production log lines showing a model being downgraded for an anonymous caller and not for a handle, and the run that settles by experiment what a prior cost analysis could only pose — OpenRouter's per-key dollar cap is a hard server-side stop, and it fires while the readable counter still shows 39.6% remaining, because that counter is eventually consistent. The conclusion is about neither endpoint. Every individual piece was reasonable: an origin allowlist is a real control, a caller-chosen model is a feature, an unguessable channel is a capability pattern. Nothing failed, nothing logged, no alarm existed, and the endpoint answered every request correctly for as long as it existed. It ends by putting that beside the papermill outage found the same day — a promise in a document, a contradiction in a JSON field nobody read — and naming them the same defect: a gap between what a system is understood to do and what it does, held open by the absence of anything that would announce the difference. Built on the oven, four pages, both columns full on every page.
