Built on an open protocol & fully federated, allowing for unprecedented extensibility and hackability. We envision a place where developers have ownership of their code, communities can freely self-govern and most importantly, coding can be social and fun again.Instead of locking identity, code, and collaboration into a centralized forge, Tangled decouples them. Your account, profile, issues, pull requests, comments, stars, strings, and vouch records live as cryptographic records on your AT Protocol Personal Data Server (PDS). Git repositories live across federated Git servers called **knots**. If the central web interface goes down, your knots and CI runners continue pushing, scheduling, and running independently. As they should!## Tangled vs GitHub- **Hackable & Fully Federated**: Tangled is open source and fully self-hostable. You can modify any component of Tangled to your liking or self-host the entire stack.- **Native Jujutsu Stacking & Round-Based Reviews**: Tangled is the first code forge to support stacking pull requests using Jujutsu, with a round-based review model where submissions are immutable and reviews stay permanently attached to the version they were made on.- **Pluggable MicroVM CI**: Tangled CI offers engines built on fast and lightweight microVMs, but you can also bring your own CI providers or execute directly on bare hosts.- **Decentralized Knots**: Anyone can run a knot (self-hosted git server) and join the network. Repositories are discoverable from tangled.org regardless of which knot they live on.## Core Architecture & Concepts- **Knots**: Lightweight, headless servers that enable users to host Git repositories with ease. Knots are designed for either single or multi-tenant use, which is perfect for self-hosting on a Raspberry Pi at home, or larger "community" servers. By default, Tangled provides managed knots where you can host your repositories for free. Repositories are discoverable from tangled.org regardless of which knot they live on.- **Spindle**: Tangled's continuous integration runner utilizing spindle engines, eg. microVM execution environments for secure & efficient builds. When you push code or open a pull request, spindle picks up the CI event, spins up a fast microVM execution environment (configured directly in your workflow file with full NixOS support, declared services like PostgreSQL, or Docker-in-microVM), and runs your defined steps. You can switch out the execution environment to use containers or execute directly on your bare host. Includes an aggressive two-way Nix binary cache so derivations are never rebuilt twice.- **Stacked Pull Requests**: Tangled is the first code forge to support stacking pull requests and interdiffing using Jujutsu. With stacks, Tangled is able to follow a change across force-pushes, view interdiffs between changes as they evolve, keep reviews pinned to exact immutable versions, and enable merging changes incrementally.- **Vouching (Web of Trust)**: Vouching is a web-of-trust on Tangled built directly on the AT Protocol (`sh.tangled.graph.vouch`) to combat LLM spam and maintainer review fatigue. You can vouch for or denounce users you interact with; vouched users get a green shield icon beside their profile picture, denounced users get a red one. Other users in your vouch network see your vouch decisions. When you vouch for or denounce someone, you create a public record on your PDS. The Tangled appview aggregates vouch data and displays indicators in issues, pull requests, and comments, attenuated to your social circle without centralized platform censorship.- **Strings**: Tangled's code snippet sharing feature (`sh.tangled.string`), letting developers store, share, and discuss code snippets, configs, and text files directly on their PDS.- **Knotmirror**: High-performance repository indexer that fetches and indexes Git refs and tree objects across all knots, allowing the web app to serve repository trees, blobs, and diffs with sub-millisecond response times regardless of where a knot lives.- **Bobbin**: A diskless, read-only AppView serving the `sh.tangled.*` Lexicons over XRPC for repository views, timelines, profiles, issues, and pull requests.- **Code Search**: Network-wide full-text and regex code search across all federated repositories on the network.- **Dolly**: Tangled's mascot, in reference to the first cloned mammal (because Git is all about cloning).## Public URL Patterns for Crawlers- **Profiles**: `https://tangled.org/{handle}` — Public profile, bio, public keys, strings, and owned repositories.- **Repositories**: `https://tangled.org/{handle}/{repo}` — Repository overview, README, file tree, branches, tags, and commits.- **Issues**: `https://tangled.org/{handle}/{repo}/issues/{issue_id}` — Issue discussion threads, labels, and author vouch state.- **Pull Requests**: `https://tangled.org/{handle}/{repo}/pulls/{pull_id}` — Stacked revisions, round-based reviews, interdiffs, and CI checks.- **Strings**: `https://tangled.org/strings/{handle}/{string_id}` — Public code snippet view with syntax highlighting and discussion.- **Commit View**: `https://tangled.org/{handle}/{repo}/commit/{ref}` — Single commit diff, author info, and tree snapshot.- **File Tree**: `https://tangled.org/{handle}/{repo}/tree/{ref}/{path}` — Source code browser at specific ref and path.- **Search**: `https://tangled.org/search` — Network-wide code and repository search.- **Sitemap**: `https://tangled.org/sitemap.xml` — XML sitemap of public profiles and repositories.## Links- [Homepage](https://tangled.org)- [About](https://tangled.org/about)- [Documentation](https://docs.tangled.org)- [Source Code](https://tangled.org/tangled.org/core)- [Blog](https://blog.tangled.org)- [Bluesky](https://bsky.app/profile/tangled.org)- [X (formerly Twitter)](https://x.com/tangled_org)- [Chat](https://chat.tangled.org)- [XRPC API](https://api.tangled.org)
