Users #
People editing local-first Markdown notes on desktop and touch devices. They add Types to ordinary Markdown nodes and need structured Record fields without losing the feel or control of writing in a document.
Product Purpose #
Reams is a mobile-first, offline-first Markdown editor backed by Automerge. Types and Records add schema-driven attributes to Markdown nodes while retaining Markdown as the visible, editable source of truth. Success means a typed node reads and folds like an ordinary node, while its fields remain easy to scan and edit.
Brand Personality #
Calm, capable, and direct. The editor should feel native to focused writing, not like a database form inserted into a document.
Anti-references #
Avoid card-heavy forms, decorative or saturated color, and copied Tana UI. Do not let structured metadata visually overpower Markdown content or create a separate interaction model.
Design Principles #
- Markdown node content remains the primary identity and editing surface.
- Structured fields belong to the node and follow its disclosure state.
- Dense information stays legible and touchable on narrow screens.
- Familiar editor interactions outrank visual novelty.
- Typed state is visible without demanding attention.
Accessibility & Inclusion #
Meet WCAG AA contrast expectations, honor reduced-motion preferences, and provide equivalent keyboard and touch paths. Disclosure state, field labels, focus order, and hidden content must be communicated semantically.
