The smell of flux burning, solder meltying, the 3d printer bristtlebotting its way off the table. It's the absolute best feeling. + + + +Software development is fun hardware feels like an extra sprinkle of magic. Perhaps its the joy of working on something physical that I can hold in my hands. Perhaps its the hard in hardware making it just that much more satisfying. Whatever it may be, I can spend so much more time on hardware projects than software. I have been working working on my [meltybrain](https://tangled.org/dunkirk.sh/holy-guacamole) combat robot the past 4ish weeks and I've poured well over 130 hours into it. I've never been able to pour that much time into a software project (outside of work ig but that doesn't count) and especially not in that condensed of a timeframe. + +Software feels too easy at times. You can have 100% test coverage and formally verify that the project will do exactly what you want it to do. Most new features can be completed fairly quickly. Especially with increased prevalance of LLMs (ew in a hardware post ik; bare with me) its harder and harder to have something that someone can look at from a glance and know you made the entire thing. It's also so easy for someone to just slop copy your project as well. Hardware on the other hand is hard. It takes time and effort and knowledge. If someone recreates my hardware project its super likely that they actually learned something in the process and also created a cool new spin on the idea. There is also and incredibly strong feeling of pride for me when I make a physical project. I've never felt that sense to quite the same sense with a piece of software. + +Perhaps this is all just my subconscious telling me I should pursue Computer Engineering but my greatest fear is that I will cease to have that same joy of creation if I devote my career to this. Hardware / electrical projects are my happy place where I go to relax and experiment. I really hope I never loose that. + +I'll leave you with a drawing I made as I wrote this piece.
