College

This year, I finished the spring and summer semesters at Laney, a community college in Oakland, and I’m starting the fall semester. I’m taking Discrete Mathematics, Data Structures and Algorithms, and a history class—nothing too exciting.

What’s exciting is that next spring will be my final semester at community college before I transfer! I’m currently applying to transfer to a four-year university. My hope is to transfer to UC Santa Cruz for a B.S. in Computer Science. It’s also internship application season, so I’m hoping to pick up a summer software engineering internship next summer (if you know of any, please reach out!).

Life

I recently started getting into coffee. I’ve been making espresso at home and got addicted. I didn’t understand the coffee cult until recently, but drinking a warm espresso while reading the morning news on the balcony brings me so much joy each morning. I found a local coffee shop nearby called Mother Tongue. They have great beans, and it’s women-owned!

I also decided, for some reason, that I wanted to run a half marathon, so I’ve started training for it. yay.

Media

I’ve had less time for gaming lately, and I wish I had more positive notes on reading, but the music has been great.

Playing

  • REPLACED (3/5): a 2D platformer that’s absolutely gorgeous and perfect for the Steam Deck
  • Alan Wake 2: waiting for Spooky Season to really dive into it
  • the Dead Space Remake, if I have time

Reading

Listening

  • WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA (5/5) (pop) from Slayyyter: amazing and perfect. It feels like this album was made specifically for me, and I’m so excited to see her live in concert soon!
  • Navy Blue (4/5) (alternative) by Porch Light, who will be releasing a new album, Hush, later this month

Watching

  • Widows Bay (5/5): if you’re into comedy or horror, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s fantastic.

I finally decided to put more effort into this site, so expect to see more frequent updates and changes in the near future! Come back soon

Let Me Introduce Myself https://danieldaum.net/about 2026-08-28T09:00:00-07:00 2026-08-28T09:00:00-07:00 Who I am: a software engineer and student in Oakland who went back to school to finish a computer science degree, and what I get up to otherwise — sci-fi and horror games, being outdoors, books, food, and learning French. daniel snowboarding in tahoe daniel hiking at pinnacles national park daniel running a relay race in Reno, Nevada

hi, I'm Daniel

I'm a software engineer and student living in Oakland, California. I worked professionally building backend services and data infrastructure before going back to school. College wasn't affordable for me the first time around, so I'm finishing my computer science degree now! I'm also learning video game development on the side

I built this site to practice writing, share my thoughts, and publish things I find interesting. It's mostly handwritten HTML and CSS - there's more on that here if you're interested.

my interests

If I'm not working, I'm probably enjoying one of the following activities!

Video games

I especially love sci-fi RPGs and horror. KOTOR 1 & 2, SWTOR, MASS EFFECT 1, 2, and 3 (and Andromeda!), Alan Wake 1 & 2, the Resident Evil series, and Dead Space are among my favorites. I've also played RuneScape since childhood and keep a rotating backlog of everything else.

Outdoors

I'm solar powered, so I enjoy almost anything that gets me outdoors and in the sun. I like to run, and occasionally will run races (see photo above). I also enjoy hiking, camping, kayaking, lifting, swimming, biking, and rock climbing.

Reading

Similar to games, I mainly enjoy science fiction and horror. I also enjoy fantasy and occasionally dip into non-fiction when I find a good one.

Food

I love great food and well-crafted cocktails. Banh Mi and ramen. Sourdough and butter. A cocktail and a small plate. Yellowbelly, Balkan Treat Box, and Menya Rui (St. Louis), Tall Boy and Bombera (Oakland), Tartine (SF - Manufactory), and Jane Jane (D.C.) are some of my favorite places - check them out!

French

I love the sound of it and am currently working on reading and speaking it. I hope to one day become fluent.

Say hello! Email me, especially if it's about books, food, or video games. My email is in the footer below.

Christie and I just wrapped up our second year as Californians. We've been exploring California, trying to make new friends, and just settle into our new lives

california pros

  • consistent weather
  • access to national parks
  • redwoods

california cons

  • no snow, or fall :(
  • old friends are far away

Anyways, it's a new year and I'm trying to ride out that 'this year will be different' feeling for as long as possible. Just the usual stuff: more exercise, more reading, and maybe ease off some of the bad habits a little

Reading

Recently I was recommended "The Will of the Many" by James Islington, and I immediately devoured it. If you enjoy reading fantasy, this should be on your list

I was able to pick up a copy of book two, "The Strength of the Few", which released recently. It is also great, and every second I have to spend not reading it is pure agony. Highly recommend

Listening

I'm always actively hunting for new music, but right now it's going...okay... I find that the more I try new bands, or listen to new sounds, the more I need to ground myself in something familiar. So here is the new and the familiar

The new

The familiar

Playing

I had extra time over winter break to go through a small backlog of games. KCD2 is a massive game, maybe too big. Demonschool was just not it for me. And I still don't quite know how to describe Indika

next up

  • alan wake 2

finished

So here's to 2026
